The Compulsive Writer’s Support Group:
The fine art of making it look easy.
In this podcast, I go over techniques in writing fiction that I use and have studied. The goal is to provide ways of writing and ways of thinking about creativity that produces an understanding of the craft of the written word and the mental aspects of creativity. I take examples from my own podcast novel, The Hidden: Urban Decay, my own short stories, and a vast amount of research into the creative process and craft of writing. While I have my own ways of working, I understand this doesn’t work for everyone, and so I’ll try to give multiple views of any aspect of creating fiction.
The Hidden: Urban Decay
The first novel in a series introduces the world of Malcolm Pierce, a sensitive magic user as he fights a demon of decay. Set in Chicago, a hotbed of shapeshifter, demonic, and spiritual activity, Malcolm must help destroy the threat posed by a new invader, the Decadere. The case begins with a badly decomposed body and navigates through a network of demonic mafia types, an internal conflict within the race of shapeshifters, and the Chicago Police Department’s own investigations of the death. Malcolm balances his use of magic with a pursuit of a scientific way of resolving the whole demonic issue via a scientist at Fermi Lab and his relationship with his succubus girlfriend, Lenore in a constant struggle to keep humans safe from threats they cannot see. He also needs a job.
